For me, it’s fun to empty a drawer or closet full of junk and reorganize it. I love the challenge and I feel so accomplished when I am done.
However, I realize that not everyone feels like that. In fact, most people feel stressed and anxious just thinking about it! They think it’s too expensive, will take too much time, and don’t have the energy. Even if they did, they’re unsure where to start and what to do with all the stuff.
I say this: “You don’t have to spend a lot of money to get organized. It’s not about buying bins, boxes, baskets or expensive custom closets. It is truly about removing the items from your life that are not serving a positive purpose.”
So, here is how to start:
⇒ Pick the space in your home/office that is easily solvable, to get you excited and keep you motivated!
⇒ What is the purpose of the area? What is your vision? Could and will it change to serve a better function?
⇒ How much time or money can you dedicate? It’s best to only spend 3-4 hours at a time, and stay in one space.
⇒ Go! Does music energize you? Caffeine? Wine?
⇒ Pick 5 things that you are unsure about keeping. Ask yourself the last time it was used. Is it broken? Will you fix it? Does it fit? Do you like it? Remember, almost anything can be replaced. If it is important, use it or showcase it. Otherwise, sell, consign, give away, donate to favorite charity, trash or recycle it! “When in doubt, throw it out.”
⇒ Reward yourself. This can be an emotional process!
⇒ Pick the next area and REPEAT!
⇒ Commit to keeping it that way by telling a friend or involving the people you live with!
